CMS-12

CMS-12 is part of 1PS BMS.

Cell management and balancing module

Overview

The CMS-12 is a 1PS BMS module for accurate battery cell monitoring and passive balancing. It is designed for LiION and lead acid battery cells. Cell voltage data is continuously evaluated and cell balancing is controlled for each cell separately.

One CMS-12 module is capable of monitoring and balancing from 6 to 12 cells. Modules can be chained up to a total of 20 modules, i.e. up to 240 battery cells in one installation.

Features:

  • Usable on most battery chemistries – lead, Li-ion, LiFePo
  • Protects agains uneven cell discharge by discharging each cell separately with a small current to equalize all cells on the same level of charge
  • Precisely measures and balances in short intervals for realtime results
  • Can be stacked and extended via isolated bus interface (IsoSPI over CAT5 Ethernet cables with RJ45 connectors)
  • Multiple balancing strategies for optimal cell equalisation

Parameters:

  • 1.6 – 5 VDC cell voltage compatible
  • Fully isolated bus interface
  • up to 12 cells per unit
  • up to 20 units daisy-chained (240 cells)
  • high precision individual cell measurement – 1.2 mV measurement error, 16 bit ADC
  • two temperature sensors for battery temperature protection
  • high efficiency and low power usage
  • overvoltage and undervoltage protection
  • temperature sensing with 2 independent thermistors per module
  • based on the state-of-the-art Analog Devices LTC6811 multi-cell battery monitor.

Please note: This module cannot be operated autonomously. It is controlled by the PCM-2 Compute module via IsoSPI interface as a part of the 1PS BMS.

Technical parameters

Schema of connection

High precision

Based on latest generation LTC6811 ICs from Analog Devices, Inc. with 1.2 mV measurement error and 16 bit ADC, the module supports high precision measurements of individual cell voltages.

Passive balancing

When cell voltages are measured, the most charged cell is selected and energy is drawn from it and dissipated as heat through resistors. Process is repeated every few seconds to ensure high precision cell balancing.

IsoSPI bus interface

Fully isolated bus interface between each module ensures safe operation even on high-voltage battery packs

Temperature monitoring

Protection against unwanted overheating of battery with user configurable temperature alert thresholds.

Web interface

The module itself does not contain any controller and cannot be operated by its own. It is necessary to connect one or more CMS-12 modules to the PCM-2 Compute module. The Compute module has an ethernet port to connect to your network. Once connected, the web interface is available to be accessed from any computer or phone in the network.

Modern and simple

Using up-to-date technologies, the web interface is accessible with any modern internet browser with HTML5 and Javascript support from any operating system.
